Makeup Removal: How to Avoid a Halloween Skin Disaster

Whether you’re dressing up as a zombie, witch or superhero, nine chances out of ten, you’re going to be applying plenty of makeup this Halloween. A scary costume isn’t complete without several layers of ghoulish makeup to match, and that could mean applying anything from fake blood, glitter, faux eyelashes and everything else in between.

Halloween is the only time of year when “anything goes” when it comes it makeup, but when you’re caking on layer after layer, have you ever stopped to think how all this extra gunk will affect your skin?

A build-up of makeup can lead to skin sensitivity, irritation and breakouts. To avoid a post-Halloween skin disaster, we have 3 skin care tips to prevent turning spooky makeup into scary skin:

1. Up your face washing game

After hours of handing out goodies to trick-or-treaters, or after a late night costume party, you’re probably only thinking about getting some well-deserved shut-eye.

Before you even think about hitting the hay, make sure you wash your face (and we don’t mean just a simple splash of water). Halloween make-up removal is going to involve a little extra time and care.

Suggested cleansing routine:

  • Step 2:  Use a towel (preferably a dark one) and pat away excess water from your face. Add a couple of drops of our Herbal Eye Makeup Remover to a cotton round pad and apply around the eye area. You may need to do this a few times depending on how heavy your eye makeup is.
  • Step 3: After you’ve thoroughly removed your eye makeup, use the same method in Step 2 but this time with our Rice Milk 3 in 1 Cleansing Water. Apply to your whole face and neck area with a cotton round pad to remove any excess makeup. Give your face a final rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a towel.

Quick Tip: Washing your make-up brushes is just as important as cleansing your skin. If not properly cleaned, makeup brushes can breed all kinds of nasty bacteria that we can’t even begin to think about. To keep the creepy crawlies off your makeup brushes, clean and sanitize them with our Natural Brush Cleanser.

2. APPLY Calming Products to minimize irritation

On the scariest night of the year, not only will you be wearing an abundance of makeup, you’ll probably be trying a few unfamiliar products as well. To avoid skin sensitivity, it’s important to treat your skin to gentle, calming products that will help minimize any redness and irritation. After you’ve washed your face, we recommend a quick spritz of our Soothing Chamomile Tonique, followed by an application of our Calm Skin Chamomile Moisturizer. Finish by applying our cooling Cucumber Eye Gel to ease the look of puffiness around your eyes.

3. Exfoliate and Purify Your Pores

To help your skin recover from its Halloween hangover, we recommend giving your complexion extra care and attention the morning after.

Start the day by exfoliating thoroughly to help unclog pores and prevent the appearance of breakouts. Our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is a gentle exfoliant for all skin types that can be used on its own or mixed with your favorite cleanser.

According to Seventeen Magazine, when left-over cosmetics on your face are mixed with oil on your T-zone, it can cause clogged pores or even worse, bacterial infections – ick! The best way to purify your pores is to follow up your exfoliation treatment with an application of our Charcoal Masque from our Balancing Masque Duo. The activated charcoal found in this masque has unique detoxification and absorption properties that help draw out excess toxins and bacteria from the skin.

These Beauty Products Will Save You Over 50 Minutes Of Time

You want healthy, beautiful skin and you want it now! As you sprint through the day, number one on your wish list is probably speedy skin care. Well, you can cross that off your list pronto because we’ve rounded up our favorite Eminence products for easy skin care…double quick.

Facial peels usually take time out of your day. If you count recovery time, sometimes they take time out of multiple days. After all, the skin needs to heal from chemical peels which literally burn away the top layers of your epidermis. Our VitaSkin Exfoliating Peels, on the other hand, are gentle and easy home skin care. First of all, the results-oriented peels remove dead skin cells but there’s no need for post-treatment recovery. Secondly, the solution is self-neutralizing so there’s no second step after the application. Lastly, it’s so easy! Apply the solution to the face with a cotton round pad and that’s it. No rinsing, no neutralization, no skin trauma.

Time needed: 10 seconds

Time saved: If a chemical peel usually takes 40 minutes of application, you’ve saved yourself 39 minutes and 50 seconds. (And we’re not even including recovery time.)

Sometimes your skin needs the extra boost of nutrients that comes from a facial masque. However, most masques need at least five to 10 minutes for maximum effectiveness, and we sure don’t have five to 10 minutes in our exceptionally busy days. That’s why we grab our Red Currant Rapid Infusion Masque when we’re short for time: This fruity mixture of red currant, pineapple and lemon targets your skin with a pop of antioxidant goodness in a scant two minutes.

Time needed: Two to three minutes

Time saved: If a regular masque needs 10 minutes, you’ve saved yourself eight minutes.

Don’t have time to do more than one thing with your skin? That’s when multi-tasking products come in handy. (Read even more about double-duty products here). You don’t have to choose between exfoliating and cleansing when you have a product that does both. Our Blueberry Soy Exfoliating Cleanser removes impurities and sloughs off dead skin cells, getting your skin clean in one easy step. How about removing makeup, cleaning and toning? Our Rice Milk 3 in 1 Cleansing Water wipes away the gunk on your face, cleanses the skin and tightens the pores all in one sweep.

Time needed for either: 30 seconds

Time saved: If removing makeup, cleansing and toning usually takes three minutes, you’ve saved two minutes and 30 seconds.

4 Fall Skin Care Ingredients You Can’t Live Without

When the seasons change, so does your skin. Now that October is in full swing, it’s time to repair your skin from last summer’s sun damage, and to address new skin issues that are associated with seasonal change.

By selecting the right skin care ingredients this fall, you can successfully manage uneven, dehydrated and lackluster skin that’s often characteristic of the cooler autumn months.

Below are 4 autumn-themed product ingredients that address all these issues (and more) to give you a flawless fall complexion:

Like clockwork every fall, the pumpkin obsession begins – from pumpkin lattes to pumpkin pies, everyone wants a piece of this seasonal treat. But what if we told you that pumpkins can do much more than tantalize your taste buds? Pumpkins are rich in enzymes, beta-carotene, amino acids and antioxidants which can do wonderful things for your skin.

For pumpkin-perfect moisture, Best Health Magazine recommends our Limited Edition Pumpkin Latte Hydration Masque – “…soothe, nourish and, as [the] name implies, super-moisturize.” The pumpkin puree of nutrient-rich goodness in this masque is especially beneficial during the dry fall months when there’s less humidity and moisture in the air.

Why not take the beauty benefits of pumpkin to the next level by adding yams to the mix? Yams have been used in Asian traditional medicine centuries due to their tremendous healing powers. This root vegetable contain allantoin, a cell proliferate that helps the healing process when applied topically on ulcers, boils and other skin conditions (

For the perfect fall pairing of ingredients, Examiner recommends our Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5%. They love it so much that they’ve named it their favorite peel in their Best in Beauty Awards 2015:

As the perfect addition to any skin care regimen, this face peel does many great things for the skin. In fact, it can correct various skin issues such as depigmentation and sun damageAs the perfect addition to any skin care regimen, this face peel does many great things for the skin. In fact, it can correct various skin issues such as depigmentation and sun damage. And whether you suffer from acne or have once suffered from acne, you can also benefit from using this organic face peel.” – Sarah Afshar, Pittsburgh Beauty Examiner (beauty blogger and former makeup artist and beauty advisor).

3. Licorice Root

Fall is the perfect time to correct any sun damage that occurred during the summer months. Licorice root, which is found in our Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel, helps brighten the appearance of uneven or sun damaged skin for a more youthful appearance. This results-oriented peel uses licorice root and our Natural Hydroquinone Alternative to brighten the appearance of dark spots, while lactic and mandelic acids gently exfoliate dead skin cells. We recommend following this treatment (and all exfoliating treatments) with an SPF product like our Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 30.

4. Cranberries

In addition to adding bursts of flavor to food, this tiny berry adds impressive beauty benefits when used as a skin care ingredient. Cranberries are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants that help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They’re also rich in phytochemicals with potent anti-inflammatory properties that are extremely effective in fighting the inflammation caused by problem skin (Livestrong). Take advantage of the beauty benefits of cranberries with our Limited Edition Cranberry Pomegranate Masque.

Everything You Need To Know About Facial Peels

Confused by what facial peels are? Do they dry on your skin like a thin layer of glue that you pull off your face? (No. Those are peel-off masks) Do they make your skin actually flake and peel off? (Sometimes. Depending on the strength of the peel.) Facial peels often have no visible peeling effect at all, which is why we’re here to unpuzzle your puzzlement with this ultimate guide. Here’s everything you need to know about facial peels:

Peels are simply another form of exfoliation. They remove dead skin cells mainly through the use of acids which loosen the bonds between cells and dissolve dead skin away (SheKnows). Unlike scrubs, peel ingredients sink into the skin, targeting deeper layers of skin cells.

Acids are a common ingredient in facial peels. For natural peels like our VitaSkin™ Exfoliating Peels, we use fruit-sourced acids like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA).

AHAs are mild, naturally occurring acids like glycolic, lactic and mandelic acids. A great choice for dry skin, AHAs exfoliate the skin surface while improving hydration.

BHAs are a little stronger and sink deeper into the pores to exfoliate and clean the pore walls. BHAs, like salicylic acid, are recommended for oily, problem skin.

Unlike our natural peels, strong chemical peels use more powerful acids that strip skin cells deeply, wound the skin and require downtime for recovery.

When you remove that dulling layer of dead skin cells with a facial peel, your skin benefits in multiple ways. Depending on the kind of peel you use, peels improve your skin tone, leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, and prime your skin for further stages of treatment. You may find that your skin looks radiant, brighter and more youthful.

There are mainly three different types of peels:

1. Deep peels
As mentioned above, these are strong chemical peels which use acids like carbolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in a painful process that penetrates deeply and causes a second degree burn on the face (WebMD).  Side effects from deep chemical peels include months-long recovery periods, the appearance of redness or burns, and the skin literally peeling or flaking away from the face.

2. Medium peels
A milder version of the deep peel which also uses TCAs, the medium peel still results in redness and a 5 to 7 day recovery period.

3. Light peels
The gentlest version of facial peels is effective without involving downtime. Light peels, like our VitaSkin™ Exfoliating Peels, don’t result in redness or require recovery. Also, our Exfoliating Peels do not need neutralization – you just apply, leave on, and see results! However, even with gentle peels, don’t forget that your skin will be more sensitive to the sun – use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit your sun exposure.

VitaSkin™ Exfoliating Peels come in 4 different types: Firm Skin Acai Exfoliating Peel, Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel, Calm Skin Chamomile Exfoliating Peel and Clear Skin Willow Bark Exfoliating Peel.
