5 Signs That Sugar Is Aging Your Face

Do you have a sugary donut in your hand? Here’s some news that will make you put down that donut and walk away: sugar ages you. Although there are lots of factors that ruin your skin, sugar is probably one of the worst offenders for outright aging your face and body.

Not only should you be avoiding sugar for dietary reasons (the new US health guidelines recommend you cut way back), you now have the added incentive of protecting your looks from the aging ravages of sugar. You heard it here first: Sugar is the new Big Bad.

Sugar bonds with proteins in your body in a process called glycation. These sugar-bonded proteins produce free radicals which destroy your collagen and elastin, the building blocks that keep your skin strong and supple. They also harden collagen and elastin, and prevent the body from making more. All these effects mean your skin loses its elasticity, lines and wrinkles start to set in, and signs of aging become more visible.

The effects of sugar on your skin are so unique, there are tell-tale signs on your face that sugar is the culprit aging you:

1. The surface of your skin looks hard and shiny.
2. Deep, crosshatch lines appear along your upper lip.
3. Discoloration and hyperpigmentation mark the skin.
4. Deep crevices appear, especially around the laugh line area.
5. Skin around the jowl area is sagging.

The good news is that you’re never too late to prevent the signs of aging. Now you know about the damage that sugar can do to your skin, here’s how you can combat the destruction and look your best:

1. Cut back on your sugar intake, especially food containing high fructose corn syrup.
2. Supplement your diet with vitamins B1 and B6 (Prevention) which inhibit the damage caused by sugar-bonded proteins.
3. Eat food and use products with antioxidants like vitamin C which reduce free radical damage to the skin and body.

Our brand new Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil is infused with oil-based vitamin C that fights the visible signs of aging and smooths wrinkles. Its ingredients also work hard in a preventative way and help reduce further symptoms of aging skin.  With regular use, your complexion will look hydrated, firmer and plumped. Target the sugar-fueled signs of aging with this unique facial oil and reveal your most beautiful, youthful-looking skin.

The Winter Skin Care Routine That Will Save Your Dull Complexion

Winter Skin-01

You’re perfectly aware that you indulged over the holidays. Your dehydrated skin, puffy eyes and a pimple or two are the result of too many sweets and not enough rest during the festive season. Just as you toss your post-holiday skin sins aside and start your new healthy beauty habits of 2016, another skin care dilemma makes an appearance… Say hello to the dreaded dull winter complexion.

Chilly winds and lack of humidity are sucking the moisture out of your skin and making it even more sensitive and reactive than normal. Even the oilier skin types are experiencing uncharacteristic dryness and flaking. Says Megan Mayer from Huffington Post Beauty, “As the temperatures continue to drop, the dry environment and lack of moisture allows for cracked hands, chapped lips and scaly legs.” Your skin has lost its lustre and looks downright lifeless.

Here’s how to tackle that dull winter skin. Since your skin changes with the seasons, we’ve created a routine for all skin types that addresses winter issues and returns your complexion to radiance:

Chilly temperatures and indoor heating are serious culprits for draining the moisture from your complexion. Try adding a hydrating, cream-based cleanser like our antioxidant-rich Firm Skin Acai Cleanser to your winter skin care routine. Dry skin types benefit from daily use of this cleanser while oily to combination skin types can try alternating a cream-based cleanser with a gel-based cleanser like our Citrus Exfoliating Wash.

Exfoliation is the best way to revive dull, winter skin. However, it’s important to keep in mind that frigid temperatures and harsh winds can also make your skin more reactive. Fit Fab Fun recommends our Calm Skin Chamomile Exfoliating Peel:

“Thanks to Eminence‘s new line of at-home exfoliating peels, your skin will look awesome. We love the Chamomile version, which soothes and renews even the most sensitive skin sans irritation and redness… And unlike some harsh formulas on the market, you can use this gentle one up to three times a week”.

3. TONE:

Another easy way to keep your skin hydrated during the winter months is using a toner. Try our Stone Crop Hydration Mist which features the healing and nourishing qualities of the stone crop plant.

Éminence masques and facial oils are the perfect way to deliver an intense dose of nutrients and moisture to the skin. We recommend our new Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. This effective facial treatment is comprised of a blend of results-oriented actives and ingredients that provide intense hydration and protection. It can be used morning and night, and is suitable for all skin types.

Bring balance to your wintertime complexion with our Balancing Masque Duo. This dual-action masque allows you to target oilier areas with the Charcoal T-Zone Purifier while the Pomelo Cheek Treatment adds a powerful dose of moisture to the drier area of your face.

Don’t forget to give extra attention to the delicate skin around your eyes. This region is the first area to show signs of dryness and aging. Nourish and hydrate the eye area daily with our Bearberry Eye Repair Cream.

And last, but definitely not least, moisturize! Even though the sun isn’t as strong during the colder months, sun damage can still occur. Apply an SPF moisturizer daily like our Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32. At night, lock in moisture with our Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer.

Detox Like These Celebrities (Gluten-Free)

What do stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Lady Gaga and Victoria Beckham have in common? For various reasons, they all choose gluten-free foods. A protein in wheat and other grains, gluten can also be found in many processed foods including commercially baked goods, imitation meat and beer as well as an array of junk food.

If you’re feeling rotten after a month of carb-heavy, gluten-filled, festive eating, there’s no better time than now to follow in these celebrity gluten-free footsteps. Your choice might help reduce gluten-linked symptoms like belly bloat, fatigue and skin inflammation. Here’s a rundown on detoxing like gluten-free celebrities and some healthy alternatives instead.

Lifestyle guru and actress Gwyneth Paltrow is so convinced by the gluten-free lifestyle that she even wrote her own cookbook called “It’s All Good”. A compilation of dairy-free, sugar-free and gluten-free recipes, the cookbook offers healthy meals that help you look good and feel good.

Weight-conscious pop queen Lady Gaga (seen here with Éminence president, Boldijarre Koronczay) usually sticks to a very healthy diet of fish, chicken and vegetables and avoids gluten. Although there is no scientific basis that eating gluten-free will promote weight loss, we’re enthusiastic that Lady Gaga chooses naturally gluten-free food like fruits and vegetables with all their nutritional benefits (Huffington Post).

Former singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham maintains a strict gluten-free diet. In fact, she is so disciplined in her food choices that she walked out of an L.A. restaurant. The restaurant refused to change her meal for a gluten-free option (New York Times).

Convinced yet that you need a gluten-free detox for the new year? Here are gluten-free alternatives for your diet and also your organic skin care.

Similar to gluten-heavy carbs, coconut oil converts to instant energy which makes it a good choice for your diet. Continue the coconut trend in your skincare with our Coconut Cream Masque which provides ultra-hydration without adding gluten to the surface of your skin.

A gluten-free starch, yams fill you up with fiber, vitamins B and C. The ingredient also powers our popular gluten-free Yam and Pumpkin Enzyme Peel which exfoliates and leaves skin radiant and firm.

Greek yogurt without additives makes a healthy alternative to a gluten-filled snack. Yogurt is also a key ingredient in our gluten-free Clear Skin Probiotic Moisturizer which detoxifies and clears up problem skin (Marie Claire).

Note: We advise consulting a medical professional before making any major changes to your diet.

The Ultimate Guide To Waking Up With Energy

Do you leap out of bed each morning glowing with positivity and boundless energy? No? The fact is you may not be a “morning person” but despite this drawback, it’s still possible to start the day feeling refreshed rather than tired. Read on for the tricks we use to wake up with verve:

1. Get enough sleep

This is a no-brainer. If you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll still feel tired regardless of how many cups of coffee you down. For most adults, the recommended number of hours each night is at least 7-8 hours. (MayoClinic)

2. Use the Sleep Cycle app

From the moment you hit the pillow, you cycle through series of three different stages including light sleep, deep sleep and the dream-state of REM sleep. Surfacing from your slumber during light sleep feels natural, and ensures that you feel refreshed and ready for the day. To get the most out of your beauty sleep, we recommend the Sleep Cycle app which monitors and rouses you during a light sleep stage.

Getting a few extra winks with the alarm on snooze is the worst way to wake up. By dipping in and out of sleep, you’re confusing your body and brain so that you feel even groggier when you finally drag yourself out of bed.

3. Stop hitting the snooze button

4. Use body scrubs

Energize yourself by jumping in the shower for an all-over exfoliation. We recommend using two of our favorite products: the Blueberry Soy Sugar Scrub and the Coconut Sugar Scrub. Smooth on a layer during your shower, massage in circular motions and rinse off.  A scrubbing massage in the morning polishes your skin and improves your blood circulation, leaving you feeling revived and invigorated.

5. Drink a large glass of lemon water

How to feel awake? According to Glamour magazine, people who drink lemon water in the morning “experience a big mental boost and have increased energy”. The water rehydrates your organs and flushes out the kidneys, while the extra squeeze of lemon helps your body’s enzymes function, stimulates the liver, as well as adds a boost of Vitamin C.
