halloweenmakeup

Whether you’re dressing up as a zombie, witch or superhero, nine chances out of ten, you’re going to be applying plenty of makeup this Halloween. A scary costume isn’t complete without several layers of ghoulish makeup to match, and that could mean applying anything from fake blood, glitter, faux eyelashes and everything else in between.

Halloween is the only time of year when “anything goes” when it comes it makeup, but when you’re caking on layer after layer, have you ever stopped to think how all this extra gunk will affect your skin?

A build-up of makeup can lead to skin sensitivity, irritation and breakouts. To avoid a post-Halloween skin disaster, we have 3 skin care tips to prevent turning spooky makeup into scary skin:

1. UP YOUR FACE WASHING GAME

After hours of handing out goodies to trick-or-treaters, or after a late night costume party, you’re probably only thinking about getting some well-deserved shut-eye.

Before you even think about hitting the hay, make sure you wash your face (and we don’t mean just a simple splash of water). Halloween make-up removal is going to involve a little extra time and care.

Suggested cleansing routine:

  • Step 1: Combine our Mineral Cleansing Concentrate with our Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser and mix with a few drops of water. This product mix produces a gentle and natural foaming action which will help effectively remove stuck-on layers of foundation and/or face paint.
  • Step 2:  Use a towel (preferably a dark one) and pat away excess water from your face. Add a couple of drops of our Herbal Eye Makeup Remover to a cotton round pad and apply around the eye area. You may need to do this a few times depending on how heavy your eye makeup is.
  • Step 3: After you’ve thoroughly removed your eye makeup, use the same method in Step 2 but this time with our Rice Milk 3 in 1 Cleansing Water. Apply to your whole face and neck area with a cotton round pad to remove any excess makeup. Give your face a final rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a towel.

Quick Tip: Washing your make-up brushes is just as important as cleansing your skin. If not properly cleaned, makeup brushes can breed all kinds of nasty bacteria that we can’t even begin to think about. To keep the creepy crawlies off your makeup brushes, clean and sanitize them with our Natural Brush Cleanser.

2. APPLY CALMING PRODUCTS TO MINIMIZE IRRITATION

On the scariest night of the year, not only will you be wearing an abundance of makeup, you’ll probably be trying a few unfamiliar products as well. To avoid skin sensitivity, it’s important to treat your skin to gentle, calming products that will help minimize any redness and irritation. After you’ve washed your face, we recommend a quick spritz of our Soothing Chamomile Tonique, followed by an application of our Calm Skin Chamomile Moisturizer. Finish by applying our cooling Cucumber Eye Gel to ease the look of puffiness around your eyes.

3. EXFOLIATE AND PURIFY YOUR PORES

To help your skin recover from its Halloween hangover, we recommend giving your complexion extra care and attention the morning after.

Start the day by exfoliating thoroughly to help unclog pores and prevent the appearance of breakouts. Our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is a gentle exfoliant for all skin types that can be used on its own or mixed with your favorite cleanser.

According to Seventeen Magazine, when left-over cosmetics on your face are mixed with oil on your T-zone, it can cause clogged pores or even worse, bacterial infections – ick! The best way to purify your pores is to follow up your exfoliation treatment with an application of our Charcoal Masque from our Balancing Masque Duo. The activated charcoal found in this masque has unique detoxification and absorption properties that help draw out excess toxins and bacteria from the skin.

fallskincare

When the seasons change, so does your skin. Now that October is in full swing, it’s time to repair your skin from last summer’s sun damage, and to address new skin issues that are associated with seasonal change.

By selecting the right skin care ingredients this fall, you can successfully manage uneven, dehydrated and lackluster skin that’s often characteristic of the cooler autumn months.

Below are 4 autumn-themed product ingredients that address all these issues (and more) to give you a flawless fall complexion:

1. PUMPKINS

Like clockwork every fall, the pumpkin obsession begins – from pumpkin lattes to pumpkin pies, everyone wants a piece of this seasonal treat. But what if we told you that pumpkins can do much more than tantalize your taste buds? Pumpkins are rich in enzymes, beta-carotene, amino acids and antioxidants which can do wonderful things for your skin.

For pumpkin-perfect moisture, Best Health Magazine recommends our Limited Edition Pumpkin Latte Hydration Masque – “…soothe, nourish and, as [the] name implies, super-moisturize.” The pumpkin puree of nutrient-rich goodness in this masque is especially beneficial during the dry fall months when there’s less humidity and moisture in the air.

2. YAMS

Why not take the beauty benefits of pumpkin to the next level by adding yams to the mix? Yams have been used in Asian traditional medicine centuries due to their tremendous healing powers. This root vegetable contain allantoin, a cell proliferate that helps the healing process when applied topically on ulcers, boils and other skin conditions (StyleCraze.com).

For the perfect fall pairing of ingredients, Examiner recommends our Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5%. They love it so much that they’ve named it their favorite peel in their Best in Beauty Awards 2015:

As the perfect addition to any skin care regimen, this face peel does many great things for the skin. In fact, it can correct various skin issues such as depigmentation and sun damage. And whether you suffer from acne or have once suffered from acne, you can also benefit from using this organic face peel.” – Sarah Afshar, Pittsburgh Beauty Examiner (beauty blogger and former makeup artist and beauty advisor).

3. LICORICE ROOT

Fall is the perfect time to correct any sun damage that occurred during the summer months. Licorice root, which is found in our Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel, helps brighten the appearance of uneven or sun damaged skin for a more youthful appearance. This results-oriented peel uses licorice root and our Natural Hydroquinone Alternative to brighten the appearance of dark spots, while lactic and mandelic acids gently exfoliate dead skin cells. We recommend following this treatment (and all exfoliating treatments) with an SPF product like our Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 30.

4. CRANBERRIES

In addition to adding bursts of flavor to food, this tiny berry adds impressive beauty benefits when used as a skin care ingredient. Cranberries are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants that help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They’re also rich in phytochemicals with potent anti-inflammatory properties that are extremely effective in fighting the inflammation caused by problem skin (Livestrong). Take advantage of the beauty benefits of cranberries with our Limited Edition Cranberry Pomegranate Masque.

alicaeminence

alicia_keys_header_v2-1

Fifteen-time Grammy-winner Alicia Keys is known for her soulful voice and positive approach to life. With 230 awards under her belt, she is no stranger to being in the limelight. One of the most on-trend personalities right now, you can catch Alicia as a new judge on NBC’s The Voice beginning September 19. Even more impressive, however, is her newfound #NoMakeup movement, highlighted by her Éminence skin care routine.

It all began when she arrived barefaced to the cover shoot for her latest album, ‘In Common’. Keeping with the tone of the album, she decided to skip the makeup chair, bare her gorgeous, radiant self and show off the effects of Éminence on her fresh-faced complexion. Her rationale was simple: “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Alicia is a huge believer that in taking care of your inner self first, your true beauty will seep through. Keeping to her word, she has been hitting every red carpet event sans makeup – and the 2016 VMAs was no different. Her best accessory was, by far, her glowing skin and radiant smile.

In an Into
The Gloss interview
, Alicia’s makeup artist Dotti explains how she achieves the star’s
flawless look with Éminence: “When [Alicia] does come to me for makeup, I always work on bringing the texture of her skin to the front … I just enhance what she brings to me. To start, we might do a mask to get some moisture in the skin. We do this lip treatment as well from Éminence [the Lip Trio Kit]—it’s three steps, so it’s nice to do if we have time. Éminence also has a nice rosehip mask [the Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque] that she’ll do.”

Alicia has been an Éminence fan since she met our General Manager, Attila Koronczay, during a Vancouver tour stop back in 2013.

So, what’s the secret to Alicia’s gorgeous all-natural look? She claims it’s a healthy lifestyle and a good skin care routine. We couldn’t agree more!

makeupbrushdiy

Are your makeup brushes in need of some deep cleaning? This makeup brush cleanser is super easy and only takes three simple ingredients!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil

5 drops Melaleuca essential oil

5 drops Grapefruit essential oil

Directions:

1. Add Fractionated Coconut Oil and essential oils into a small bowl.

2. Swirl your brush in the Fractionated Coconut Oil for 30 seconds, or until you see the makeup stored in your brush start to come out.3. Rub in a circular motion on the palm of hand to help get the makeup out.

3. Rinse the brush under warm water. Gently squeeze brush bristles until clean, and the water runs clear. Please note: Make sure to point the bristles down when running under water. Direct water contact may loosen the glue where the bristles are attach and shorten the life of your brushes.

4. Let your newly cleaned makeup brushes dry on a towel for 4 hours, or until dry. Repeat once a month, or as needed.
