winterskin

You’re perfectly aware that you indulged over the holidays. Your dehydrated skin, puffy eyes and a pimple or two are the result of too many sweets and not enough rest during the festive season. Just as you toss your post-holiday skin sins aside and start your new healthy beauty habits of 2017, another skin care dilemma makes an appearance… Say hello to the dreaded dull winter complexion.

Chilly winds and lack of humidity are sucking the moisture out of your skin and making it even more sensitive and reactive than normal. Even the oilier skin types are experiencing uncharacteristic dryness and flaking. Says Megan Mayer from Huffington Post Beauty, “As the temperatures continue to drop, the dry environment and lack of moisture allows for cracked hands, chapped lips and scaly legs.” Your skin has lost its lustre and looks downright lifeless.

Here’s how to tackle that dull winter skin. Since your skin changes with the seasons, we’ve created a routine for all skin types that addresses winter issues and returns your complexion to radiance:

winter_skin_care_routine_resized

1. CLEANSE:

Chilly temperatures and indoor heating are serious culprits for draining the moisture from your complexion. Try adding a hydrating, cream-based cleanser like our antioxidant-rich Firm Skin Acai Cleanser to your winter skin care routine. Dry skin types benefit from daily use of this cleanser while oily to combination skin types can try alternating a cream-based cleanser with a gel-based cleanser like our Citrus Exfoliating Wash.

2. EXFOLIATE:

Exfoliation is the best way to revive dull, winter skin. However, it’s important to keep in mind that frigid temperatures and harsh winds can also make your skin more reactive. Fit Fab Fun recommends our Calm Skin Chamomile Exfoliating Peel:

“Thanks to Eminence‘s new line of at-home exfoliating peels, your skin will look awesome. We love the Chamomile version, which soothes and renews even the most sensitive skin sans irritation and redness… And unlike some harsh formulas on the market, you can use this gentle one up to three times a week”.

3. TONE:

Another easy way to keep your skin hydrated during the winter months is using a toner. Try our Stone Crop Hydration Mist which features the healing and nourishing qualities of the stone crop plant.

4. TREAT:

Éminence masques and facial oils are the perfect way to deliver an intense dose of nutrients and moisture to the skin. We recommend our new Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. This effective facial treatment is comprised of a blend of results-oriented actives and ingredients that provide intense hydration and protection. It can be used morning and night, and is suitable for all skin types.

Bring balance to your wintertime complexion with our Balancing Masque Duo. This dual-action masque allows you to target oilier areas with the Charcoal T-Zone Purifier while the Pomelo Cheek Treatment adds a powerful dose of moisture to the drier area of your face.

Don’t forget to give extra attention to the delicate skin around your eyes. This region is the first area to show signs of dryness and aging. Nourish and hydrate the eye area daily with our Bearberry Eye Repair Cream.

5. MOISTURIZE:

And last, but definitely not least, moisturize! Even though the sun isn’t as strong during the colder months, sun damage can still occur. Apply an SPF moisturizer daily like our Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32. At night, lock in moisture with our Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer.

To enhance your winter skin care routine even further, try our selection of cold weather essentials that bring vitality back to your wintertime complexion.

#GreenSpaGiftOfTime

giftoftimecontest

The Green Spa & Wellness Center posed a challenge for our community to re-think the quality of gift giving this holiday season. It was a simple campaign to honor ourselves, our loved ones,  and those around us to give the absolute best possible gift there is to give, something that no one would want to return or take back, something truly cherished this year.

If you think long and hard about the one thing that we never have enough of, the one thing that we could all use a whole lot more of and you will agree that – The Precious gift of Time just could not be beat. We never have enough time, we constantly run out of it, it disappears before we ever have a chance to use it. We often feel guilty about spending time on ourselves or thinking about ourselves.

Since we decided that giving the gift of time would be our pledge to share with our community. We challenged all to either share time with loved ones this holiday season, care for our own time by not exhausting ourselves with the holiday madness and give others a special gift of spending time on themselves.

Our time is so important and we just don’t cherish it enough. How about time to relax, unwind, smooth our bodies and minds-now that may feel downright impossible sometimes! What would be the most relaxing way to unwind and relax this year? Hands down everyone agreed- getting a massage, a relaxing tub soak or an invigorating body scrub and eucalyptus steam shower.

We don’t take time to care for ourselves. So our campaign began and #GreenSpaGiftOfTime was born. This is the perfect chance to spend quality time together; get a couples massage, plan a long overdue reunion with a friends or experience our NEW Dermapen facial with oxygen blast.

How about nominating someone who can’t or won’t care for themselves enough this year. Who could you think of that may never have the opportunity to experience a massage in their entire life? Think about the people in your life that would never spend the money or time on themselves. Think about the elderly in your life that maybe never had a spa service before. Bring a customized self care basket from The Green Spa filled with relaxing bath soak, body butter and soothing oils to an elderly loved one that might not be able to leave the house. How about the pregnant mom who is busy thinking of the emerging little one. At The Green Spa we use organic and vegan products safe for the expecting mom. How about your husband or wife that just deserves some pampering…the list goes on and on.

Maria Ingardia, Co-Owner of The Green Spa showed up to her 90 something year old  grandmothers home on a mission to bring the Spa to her. Grandma was preparing fig cookies like she does every year for the holidays! Maria thought if grandma could just relax while she received a relaxing hand massage or neck massage, that would be the best gift for her. She brought Vegan Legend Body Scrub and Body Oil to soothe her feet and legs along with Deep Blue penetrating Rub for her back and relaxing DoTerra essential oils. When grandma was asked what she wanted this year…She uttered one word to Maria, I wish for more TIME ! We know grandma wasn’t up on trending hash tags and certainly doesn’t know about our campaign. Grandma spoke the true words of what we all wish for and ultimately will run out of – TIME!

gingerbreadblogThe holiday season wouldn’t be complete without your favorite festive treat. For some it’s shortbread cookies, for others it might be candy canes or chocolate. Whatever your guilty pleasure – there’s no denying that gingerbread cookies are on top of everyone’s holiday indulgence list.

Lucky for you – we have a gingerbread recipe for you that contains natural and healthy ingredients so you can satisfy your sweet tooth – guilt-free!

INGREDIENTS:
1 large egg
1/3 cup coconut oil (melted at room temperature)
1/3 cup maple syrup or raw honey
1/4 cup unsulphured organic molasses
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 tsp dried ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups organic whole wheat flour (or gluten free flour blend)

OPTIONAL:
Cookie toppings: Ground nuts, seeds, candies or powdered icing sugar.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
2. Combine dry ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
3. Lightly beat egg in a separate bowl, adding wet ingredients until well-combined.
4. Slowly add dry ingredients (about 1/4 cup at a time) to wet ingredients, mixing with a spatula or wooden spoon first. The consistency may be different if you choose a gluten-free flour mixture. Once the dough mixture thickens, knead and mix it with clean hands until it forms a thick consistency.
5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface, and add excess flour to a rolling pin.
6. Roll out dough with a rolling pin until approximately 1/2 inch in thickness.
7. Cut out cookies using your favorite festive-shaped cookie cutters.
8. If you decide to garnish the cookies with candy sprinkles or ground nuts/seeds, this is when you would decorate the cookies as you wish. For a powdered sugar finish see step 10.
9. Place cut out cookies on a parchment paper-covered baking tray and bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should rise slightly.
10. Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool completely at room temperature.
11. Once cookies have cooled, sift powdered sugar over top of cookies.
12. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks. Makes approximately 1 dozen cookies depending on cookie cutter size.

Our immune system is an especially important part of overall health.

It is especially important to be mindful of our immune system during transitional times of the year, for instance, the beginning of a new school year when exposure to environmental threats increases. Many lifestyle factors can also weaken our immune system, including stress, lack of sleep, exposure to toxicity, and poor nutrition. Managing each of these areas and adopting a model of consistency that actively supports the immune system is an excellent way to maintain health throughout the year.

It is especially important to be mindful of our immune system during transitional times of the year, for instance, the beginning of a new school year when exposure to germs increases. Many lifestyle factors can also weaken our immune system, including stress, lack of sleep, exposure to toxicity, and poor nutrition. Managing each of these areas and adopting a model of consistency that actively supports the immune system is an excellent way to maintain health throughout the year. Although the physiologic functioning of the immune system is complex, it can be broken down into two main parts–fixed and mobile immunity. Fixed immunity serves as the body’s first line of defense against potential threats by preventing harmful elements from ever entering circulation. This type of immunity is composed of the various protective barriers that exist between the delicate internal environment of the body and the outside environment, (for example, the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and skin). We also have mobile immunity that is activated if the body does become infected. Specialized immune cells quickly congregate at the site of infection to initiate the healing process. The combined work of both aspects of immunity is critical for staying healthy.

Take proactive measures to enhance the body’s ability to protect itself.

Supporting our immune system can be easily achieved. We should focus on simple approaches that are easy to implement and easy to share with others. Among the greatest benefits of essential oils is that they are simple to apply and offer consistent benefits. Here are steps that can be used to support both fixed and mobile immunity and, in turn, maximize the health of your family during colder months.

Build Healthy Intestinal Flora:

The gastrointestinal (GI) system plays a key role in fixed immunity. If health of the GI tract is compromised, so is the immune system. A probiotic supplement such as doTERRA PB Assist+ is an excellent way to populate the GI tract with beneficial microflora, thus enhancing immunity.* It’s important to use a probiotic supplement that bypasses the strong acidic environment of the stomach and releases the bacteria into the intestines where it will have the most substantial effect. Using innovative encapsulation technology, PB Assist+ delivers a combination of live bacteria strains and a fructo-oligosaccharide prebiotic directly into the intestines, helping to populate the GI tract with helpful microflora while also optimizing colony adhesion and growth. This product is best used daily, but is especially important during periods when the immune system is vulnerable.

Diffuse Essential Oils Regularly:

Scientific study demonstrates that diffusion of essential oils can purify and cleanse the air, providing added protection when the seasonal threats are high. I recommend diffusing essential oils every day. Lemon and On Guard Protective Blend contain powerful cleansing properties that purify the air we breathe, delivering positive effects on the immune system.

Use Essential Oils to Clean Surfaces:

Frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs, keyboards, cell phones, and grocery carts can be more harmful during certain times of the year. Cleaning these surfaces often is an important part of minimizing exposure to harmful particles. The On Guard cleaning products are a highly effective way to clean surfaces while preventing exposure to toxins. I also suggest using Lemon, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, Purify Cleansing Blend, or the On Guard Protective Blend. Our immunity is limited to its own ability to function properly. It is important to both minimize exposure to elements that may harm our immune system and to take proactive, consistent measures to enhance the body’s ability to protect itself. By developing a daily routine and integrating these tips into a model of consistency, we can easily and effectively keep our families healthy throughout all seasons of the year.
