Your wedding day beauty look may be the most important makeup of your life, and many brides don’t know where to start when searching for the right makeup artist. So, we turned to our team of Global Makeup Educators for help. Keep reading for their tips on what to ask, what to bring, and what things you should always remember.

6-12 Months before Your Wedding

Collect images of bridal makeup you love.

Pictures models and celebrities are often retouched, but they are to use as inspiration and will help guide your initial makeup artist interview.

Find three images of yourself that you absolutely love.

Bring these images with you, as well, and be sure to explain what you love about the pictures (e.g. I love how the eye shadow brings out the color of my eyes).

Schedule preliminary interviews with multiple makeup artists.

Show them the inspiration photos of models, celebrities and yourself, and ask the below questions:

  • How long have you been doing bridal makeup?
  • What do you love about doing bridal makeup?
  • Can I see your portfolio or images of makeup you’ve done? (Look at their images and ask yourself if this is how you want to look.)
  • How do you go about choosing your look for each bride?
  • What brands of makeup do you use? (Check a brand if you’re not familiar with it to make sure it’s something you want to use.)
  • Do you have a capability of doing my entire wedding party?
  • Do you do off-site weddings? If I hire you, will you stay all day? How much will this cost me?
  • Can I see your brushes? (If their brushes are gross, chances are your skin will be too.)

3-5 Months before Your Wedding

Schedule your bridal makeup test.

After you decide on a makeup artist, schedule your makeup test 3-5 months prior to your wedding. At the appointment, our educators recommend:

  • Testing multiple beauty looks (one for the ceremony and one for the reception). If your makeup artist cannot stay all day for your wedding, ask what you will need to complete your reception look without him/her.
  • Arriving with your bridal hair done or with an idea of what your wedding day hairstyle will look like.
  • Wearing a white top or one that is the same shade as your wedding dress so you can see how your makeup will appear when paired with your dress color.
  • Taking pictures with a camera that has a bright flash. This will help you determine what your makeup will look like under a professional camera flash, which tends to wash you out.

3 Things to Remember

Bridal makeup should be timeless. 20 years from now you should be able to look back at the pictures and still feel like your look is beautiful and classic.

Groom the groom. Often, the groom gets overlooked during the makeup preparations, but he wants to look good in pictures too. Ask your makeup artist to even his complexion or tone down the shine so he looks and feels great in your pictures.

Ask for what you want. Your wedding day is considered one of the most important days of your life, so don’t hesitate to ask your makeup artist for the exact look you want, and if you don’t like part of the look, make sure to speak up.

winter makeup collection, mystikol cream to powder eyeliner

We know, “next beauty must-have” is a bold claim, but Mystikol eyeliners are our latest obsession. Below are five reasons to lust over this winter makeup essential:

  1. Mystikol eyeliners are available in four long-wearing, intense shades: Onyx (jet black), Dark Topaz (metallic chocolate brown), Amethyst (royal purple) and Smoky Quartz (smoky grey).
  2. Two words— water resistant. With these eyeliners, you don’t have to worry about smears.
  3. The brush is built into the cap. Let me repeat that… THE BRUSH IS BUILT INTO THE CAP! This handy feature makes it a total breeze to create the perfect rich line at home or on-the-go.
  4. Coco glycerides in the formula help it go on smooth across your lids and lash line.
  5. Last, but certainly not least, Mystikol eyeliners have the staying power of a liquid, but are completely blendable like a powder or pencil. Check out how to transform your eyeliner look from clean to smudged to smokey in seconds:

But , wait…there’s more!

When sporting a sultry, smokey eye, we suggest keeping the rest of your look clean and natural. With our Pure & Simple Kits, it’s never been easier to do so. Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and two colors are on our mind – pink and red. Pink is our favorite lipstick color when we want to create an effortless, natural makeup look. But, red is the shade we choose when we want to stand out and feel confident. You may think a red lip is only for movie stars and women who drink everything out of straws. But we’re here to show you how easy it is to create a red pout that works with your style. Keep reading for simple tips from our Global Makeup Educators on how to wear red lipstick.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wear Red Lipstick

If you rarely wear red lipstick, here are a few pointers from Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez and Hannah Hatcher. With these four steps, you’ll have a soft, kiss-friendly pout all night.

Exfoliate First – “Red lipstick looks best on smooth, hydrated, plumped lips,” says Edgar. He recommends exfoliating and hydrating your lips with our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator & Plumper before you even pick out your lipstick shade.

Define Your Lips – Use a lip liner that is a similar color to your lipstick (try Crimson Lip Pencil). This will give your lips natural definition. Hannah Suggests lining and filling in your lips with the same shade to help create a kiss-proof finish.

Use a Lip Brush – For the most precise look, Edgar recommends using our Retractable Lip Brush to apply the lipstick. The brush will make it easier to color inside your lip pencil line.

Set It, and Go! – For a matte stay-put pucker, Hannah likes to finish her red lipped look with a little Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder. You can use your finger to gently dab it on over your lipstick.

Choosing the Right Red Lip for You

Red lip products come in many different shades and formulations. From the classic red lipstick à la Marilyn Monroe to a more natural red lip tint, we have you covered. Here are our favorite red lip products to use for a natural, classic or long-lasting look.

Natural Reds

  • “My favorite red shade that is youthful and flattering on all skin tones is Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain,’ says Edgar. “It has the perfect balance of coral and red, leaving you with a smooth personalized signature red that stays.”
  • Want to add a little shimmer to your candy apple lip? Product Trainer Christine Orcutt Savolis suggests topping your favorite lip product with Crabapple or Red Current PureGloss Lip Gloss.

The Classic Red

  • If you are looking for the classic red lipstick, Hannah’s pick is Cindy PureMoist Lipstick.

Long-lasting Reds

  • To ensure your lip color lasts through your romantic dinner, Global Makeup Educator Shawn Towne recommends using Lip Fixation. He says, “apply the stain from Passion Lip Fixation to your lips, then top it with Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. The color it creates is really rich and beautiful.”
  • Christine’s secret to a matte red is Hot PlayOn Lip Crayon. She also likes to layer it with Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain for added staying power. “I always say when you want a red lip, you want it to last, ” she says. “Forever Red really stays and is easy to touch up later in the day.”

makeuptips

According to a number of studies, over 50% of adults categorize their skin as sensitive ¹, but the term “sensitive skin” means different things for everyone. In an article from the Expert Review of Dermatology, sensitive or reactive skin is defined as: “the occurrence of abnormal stinging, burning, pain, [itching] and tingling sensations in response to multiple factors, which may be physical, chemical, psychological or hormonal.”²

Skin sensitivity can be an isolated occurrence or an ongoing issue caused by conditions such as rosacea or eczema. Regardless of the root cause, we all have sensitive skin at one point or another; many of us may even find winter weather to be the main case of this issue. Whether you suffer from chronic skin sensitivity or experience infrequent or seasonal irritation, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the likelihood of an abnormal skin reaction.

Sun Protection

Almost every dermatologist will tell you the best thing you can do for your skin is to apply sunscreen. This is even more true for those with sensitive skin, which may react more to external triggers like sun and heat. Additionally, Titanium Dioxide, used in physical sunscreens, helps calm inflammation and is listed in the FDA monograph as one of the purest and most effective active ingredients for sun protection.

Shop Wisely

When shopping for new skin care and cosmetics, the back of the box is your best friend. You want to avoid ingredients that will make your skin react like artificial perfumes, dyes, harsh chemicals and parabens.

Cleanse with Care

Regardless of your skin type, over-exfoliating and over-cleansing can cause skin irritation. You want to treat your skin with kindness as you would the rest of your body, so here are some cleansing tips to remember:

  • Wash your face and body with lukewarm water, as opposed to steaming hot, which can dry out your skin and create redness that is difficult to calm.
  • Use gentle exfoliators and cleansers. Your face wash  should be effective enough to remove makeup and dirt, without stripping the oils from your skin or forcing you to scrub hard.
  • Exfoliate, at most, three days per week.
  • When you’re done washing your face, blot the skin dry (don’t rub) and immediately apply moisturizer for maximum absorption.

Test It Out

When considering new skin care products, always do a patch test before diving in head first. This precautionary test should be done at least 24 hours prior to full application. If your skin is very reactive, you may want to patch test it for as long as a week. To do so, apply a small amount of product to an area around the size of a dime. The location of the test depends on what you are testing for; do it behind the ear to test for an allergic reaction or on your most sensitive area to test for irritation.

Feed Your Skin

They say “you are what you eat” for a reason. Skin sensitivity is not only about what goes on your skin; it’s also about what you put in your body. Depending on your sensitivity triggers, there are certain foods your doctor may recommend you avoid. But, overall, you should treat your food like you would your skin care. Try to stay away from overly processed foods with a lot of artificial ingredients. You can also help you skin stay hydrated by drinking water; if you feel thirsty, your skin feels the same way.

falltrends

Summer is almost over and fall is right around the corner! We’re excited to share a few of our favorite fall 2016 beauty trends that inspired our Fashion Forward collection.

Shimmery Eyelids
Lustrous lids appeared all over the fall runway, and the look works well no matter your style. If you love a natural makeup look, choose a subtle taupe or brown creamy eye shadow. Pick a pink or copper hue for a flirty, feminine look, and stick to golds, silvers or lemony yellows for a dazzling night out.

Get the Look: Try our NEW Smooth Affair for Eyes eyelid primers. They double as a pearly eye shadow and can be applied with your fingers!

No Makeup, Makeup
The no makeup, makeup trend is still going strong, and well-groomed eyebrows are the best way to look polished when your makeup is at a minimum. For a softer, more natural brow, use eyebrow powder and a spoolie brush. If you already have full brows, try a brow gel. And, if you need to fill-in or shape your brows, pick up a brow pencil. Read our pro tips on how to shape your eyebrows.

Get the Look: Our NEW Retractable Eyebrow Pencils are the newest addition to our brow arsenal, and work well with all hair colors.

Dark Romance
A dark vampy lip, and soft romantic hair was another one of the big fall 2016 beauty trends. If you love the look, but want to avoid looking too goth, pair wine-stained lips with barely-there eye and cheek makeup. May we also recommend a soft, romantic hairstyle? It will keep the look from appearing too severe.

Get the Look: One word…Fetish! Our Fetish Lip Fixation Lip Stain will give you the perfect plum put with a long-lasting matte finish.

Classic Reds
A classic red lipstick never goes out of style. For fall, designers made this look more modern by toning down eye makeup, and slicking hair back. We say, a red looks brilliant with any hair style, so dare to be bold!

Get the Look: Cindy, our newest PureMoist Lipstick shade is all you’ll need for this look. (Pro tip: apply powder foundation under your lipstick to avoid feathering or smudging.)
