Warming neck wraps are a terrific gift to give during the holidays. They can help soothe sore muscles and enhance relaxation. When used with essential oils, they can provide additional relief and aromatherapy benefits. Below are three tutorials on how you can make your own warming neck wraps that vary by skill level. Even if you don’t consider yourself a crafty person, you will be surprised at how easy it is to make your own. No matter your skill level, you will be able to find a tutorial that’s right for you. Have fun!

ADVANCED LEVEL

½ yard flannel or cotton cut into two 8 x 20 inch pieces.
6 cups flaxseed or rice
Sewing machine
doTERRA essential oil(s)
Directions:
  1. Cut fabric into two 8 x 20 inch pieces.
  2. Place right sides (pretty sides) together and pin along edges.
  3. With right sides together, sew ¼” seam all the way around the fabric leaving a three-inch opening on a short end and turn right sides out.
  4. Divide the length of the fabric into four equal sections and mark with a fabric marker.
  5. Loosely fill the first quarter with two cups of rice or flax seeds.
  6. Sew on marked line. Repeat until all four sections are filled.
  7. Sew opening closed and you’re done.
  8. To use, microwave for two to three minutes and add 2 drops of essential oil on the outer fabric.

Kitchen Towel
6 cups flaxseed or rice
Sewing Machine
doTERRA  Essential Oil(s)

  1. Fold towel in half longways (hot-dog style).
  2. Sew around the edges leaving a three-inch opening. Turn right side out.
  3. Loosely fill with flax seeds or rice.

  1. Pour flaxseed or rice into sock.
  2. Tie a knot and you’re done.
  3. To use, place in microwave for 2-3 minutes and then add 2 drops essential oil.
Tips:
  • If you smell burning while microwaving your heating pad, you are microwaving it too long. Try cutting down the heating time or lowering the power setting to 50%.
  • Use the leftover fabric to make hand warmers.
  • Homemade heating pads make great gifts. Give a heating pad with a bottle of your favorite doTERRA essential oil to friends and loved ones for a practical gift they are sure to love!
Editors Note: If you don’t have a microwave, you can heat your heating pad by putting it in an oven-safe dish and heating it in the oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. Remember to set a timer and to frequently check your heating pad to make sure it doesn’t get too hot and become a fire hazard.
CAUTION: The heating pad will be very warm and can burn you if you heat it for too long. Start by putting your heating bag in the microwave for 1 minute, and then increase by 30 second increments until you have achieved your desired temperature. If you accidentally heat it for too long, let it rest until it becomes cooler. You might also want to place a wash cloth or towel against your skin to act as a barrier and to ensure you don’t get burned in case you heat it more than you intended.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and two colors are on our mind – pink and red. Pink is our favorite lipstick color when we want to create an effortless, natural makeup look. But, red is the shade we choose when we want to stand out and feel confident. You may think a red lip is only for movie stars and women who drink everything out of straws. But we’re here to show you how easy it is to create a red pout that works with your style. Keep reading for simple tips from our Global Makeup Educators on how to wear red lipstick.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wear Red Lipstick

If you rarely wear red lipstick, here are a few pointers from Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez and Hannah Hatcher. With these four steps, you’ll have a soft, kiss-friendly pout all night.

Exfoliate First – “Red lipstick looks best on smooth, hydrated, plumped lips,” says Edgar. He recommends exfoliating and hydrating your lips with our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator & Plumper before you even pick out your lipstick shade.

Define Your Lips – Use a lip liner that is a similar color to your lipstick (try Crimson Lip Pencil). This will give your lips natural definition. Hannah Suggests lining and filling in your lips with the same shade to help create a kiss-proof finish.

Use a Lip Brush – For the most precise look, Edgar recommends using our Retractable Lip Brush to apply the lipstick. The brush will make it easier to color inside your lip pencil line.

Set It, and Go! – For a matte stay-put pucker, Hannah likes to finish her red lipped look with a little Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder. You can use your finger to gently dab it on over your lipstick.

Choosing the Right Red Lip for You

Red lip products come in many different shades and formulations. From the classic red lipstick à la Marilyn Monroe to a more natural red lip tint, we have you covered. Here are our favorite red lip products to use for a natural, classic or long-lasting look.

Natural Reds

  • “My favorite red shade that is youthful and flattering on all skin tones is Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain,’ says Edgar. “It has the perfect balance of coral and red, leaving you with a smooth personalized signature red that stays.”
  • Want to add a little shimmer to your candy apple lip? Product Trainer Christine Orcutt Savolis suggests topping your favorite lip product with Crabapple or Red Current PureGloss Lip Gloss.

The Classic Red

  • If you are looking for the classic red lipstick, Hannah’s pick is Cindy PureMoist Lipstick.

Long-lasting Reds

  • To ensure your lip color lasts through your romantic dinner, Global Makeup Educator Shawn Towne recommends using Lip Fixation. He says, “apply the stain from Passion Lip Fixation to your lips, then top it with Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. The color it creates is really rich and beautiful.”
  • Christine’s secret to a matte red is Hot PlayOn Lip Crayon. She also likes to layer it with Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain for added staying power. “I always say when you want a red lip, you want it to last, ” she says. “Forever Red really stays and is easy to touch up later in the day.”

If your mind and body are struggling with the winter blues and chilly weather, turn to our Apricot Body Oil to invigorate your senses and soothe your skin. A Vogue, ELLE and Marie Claire favorite, this award-winning body oil blends fragrant apricot, moisturizing grape seed and hydrating jojoba oils for skin that is irresistibly smooth and supple from head to toe. Boxed in gorgeous, limited edition Valentine’s Day packaging, it’s the perfect gift for your sweetheart.

Warm this luxurious oil in your hands for a deeply hydrating, sensory massage – and if your blissful state leaves you craving more, try these unexpected ways to incorporate Apricot Body Oil into your body care routine.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, we can think of nothing more romantic (and downright relaxing) than a massage with our award-winning Apricot Body Oil. But when you’re done loosening up those tight shoulder muscles, you’ll find that this luscious body oil isn’t just miraculous for rubdowns and can be used in other surprising ways.

GIVE YOUR BODY LOTION A BOOST

Mix 1-3 drops of Apricot Body Oil with your favorite body lotion for an ultra-rich treat. We recommend pairing it with our Coconut Firming Body Lotion – another ELLE favorite – to deliver intense hydration to aging skin. The coconut, shea butter and grape seed oil in the Coconut Firming Body Lotion leave skin looking tighter and firmer, while the apricot kernel oil and jojoba oil in our Apricot Body Oil leave it feeling exquisitely soft and smooth. Massage into dry hands and elbows for an extra dose of long-lasting moisture.

RELAX IN AN AROMATIC BATH

For an all-over skin conditioning treatment, add 1-2 capfuls of Apricot Body Oil to your bath. Dim the lights and close your eyes for an indulgent aromatic experience. Muscles tired and aching after a rigorous workout? Add 2 cups of Epsom salts to your apricot-infused bath for ultimate relaxation. Once emerging from your heavenly soak (if you can!), smooth a few drops of Apricot Body Oil onto slightly damp skin for deeper penetration of this luscious oil’s feel-good ingredients.

SLOUGH OFF DRY WINTER SKIN

Say goodbye to dry and flaky winter skin by mixing a few drops of Apricot Body Oil with two shakes of Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant. Rub your hands together to create a creamy paste and apply it to dry areas as a gentle all-over body scrub. The rice powder and lactic acid in the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant slough off dead skin cells and buff skin texture to leave it looking perfectly polished, while the Apricot Body Oil adds a dose of deep hydration for gorgeous, velvety skin.

makeuptips

According to a number of studies, over 50% of adults categorize their skin as sensitive ¹, but the term “sensitive skin” means different things for everyone. In an article from the Expert Review of Dermatology, sensitive or reactive skin is defined as: “the occurrence of abnormal stinging, burning, pain, [itching] and tingling sensations in response to multiple factors, which may be physical, chemical, psychological or hormonal.”²

Skin sensitivity can be an isolated occurrence or an ongoing issue caused by conditions such as rosacea or eczema. Regardless of the root cause, we all have sensitive skin at one point or another; many of us may even find winter weather to be the main case of this issue. Whether you suffer from chronic skin sensitivity or experience infrequent or seasonal irritation, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the likelihood of an abnormal skin reaction.

Sun Protection

Almost every dermatologist will tell you the best thing you can do for your skin is to apply sunscreen. This is even more true for those with sensitive skin, which may react more to external triggers like sun and heat. Additionally, Titanium Dioxide, used in physical sunscreens, helps calm inflammation and is listed in the FDA monograph as one of the purest and most effective active ingredients for sun protection.

Shop Wisely

When shopping for new skin care and cosmetics, the back of the box is your best friend. You want to avoid ingredients that will make your skin react like artificial perfumes, dyes, harsh chemicals and parabens.

Cleanse with Care

Regardless of your skin type, over-exfoliating and over-cleansing can cause skin irritation. You want to treat your skin with kindness as you would the rest of your body, so here are some cleansing tips to remember:

  • Wash your face and body with lukewarm water, as opposed to steaming hot, which can dry out your skin and create redness that is difficult to calm.
  • Use gentle exfoliators and cleansers. Your face wash  should be effective enough to remove makeup and dirt, without stripping the oils from your skin or forcing you to scrub hard.
  • Exfoliate, at most, three days per week.
  • When you’re done washing your face, blot the skin dry (don’t rub) and immediately apply moisturizer for maximum absorption.

Test It Out

When considering new skin care products, always do a patch test before diving in head first. This precautionary test should be done at least 24 hours prior to full application. If your skin is very reactive, you may want to patch test it for as long as a week. To do so, apply a small amount of product to an area around the size of a dime. The location of the test depends on what you are testing for; do it behind the ear to test for an allergic reaction or on your most sensitive area to test for irritation.

Feed Your Skin

They say “you are what you eat” for a reason. Skin sensitivity is not only about what goes on your skin; it’s also about what you put in your body. Depending on your sensitivity triggers, there are certain foods your doctor may recommend you avoid. But, overall, you should treat your food like you would your skin care. Try to stay away from overly processed foods with a lot of artificial ingredients. You can also help you skin stay hydrated by drinking water; if you feel thirsty, your skin feels the same way.

skin-part-2

If you follow our blog, you’ll know that we created a new 30 day habit for you to start off the year with the best skin ever (remember Part 1 here?). Now that you’re in the swing of things, we’ll take you through the rest of your 30 day plan for gorgeous, flawless skin. Stick to our organic skin care recommendations and prepare to behold your skin achieving next-level radiance:

chart_1

DAY 17
Apply an exfoliating peel to renew your skin surface with gentle acids. Our VitaSkin™ Exfoliating Peels are effective but gentle peels that can be used up to three times a week.

DAY 18
Use an eyecream today and every day. The delicate skin around your eyes needs daily care since it is the first area to show signs of dryness and aging.Nourish and hydrate the eye area daily with a moisturizer like Bearberry Eye Repair Cream.

DAY 19
Use a toner after cleansing to remove all traces of impurities and return your skin to its normal pH balance. Don’t know which toner to use? Explore our wide selection of toniques and mists for your particular skin type and read this blog post for tips.

DAY 20
Eat dark leafy greens today and regularly. Load up on kale, broccoli, chard and other greens that are full of antioxidants to help repair and renew your skin (TotalBeauty).

DAY 21
Use a night cream before you sleep. Ingredients are absorbed more readily into the skin overnight, hydration is more effective, and night creams tend to contain more actives. Review our night care products to find the right cream for your skin type.

DAY 22
Spray tonique throughout the day to hydrate. Instead of messing up your makeup during the day with a moisturizer or cream, try a tonique or mist to add moisture. The Stone Crop Hydrating Mist is a popular choice that can be used for all skin types.

DAY 23
Use serum regularly to target specific issues with your skin. Because serums contain a higher concentration of active ingredients, adding them to your routine will be the most effective type of product in tackling skin issues. Explore our array of serums, oils and concentrates.

DAY 24
Don’t forget your neck and chest area. The skin here tends to be thin and shows the first signs of aging. One fantastic product that’s formulated for these often-neglected areas is our Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream for Face and Neck.

DAY 25
Eat watermelon or tomatoes today. These fruits are powered by lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces UV damage to the skin and protects against the visible signs of aging (Daily Mail).

DAY 26
Use a humidifier. Especially during dry winter months, a humidifier will help your skin retain moisture and stay healthy.

DAY 27
Try a facial oil for hydration. Using an oil in addition to, or instead of, a moisturizer can provide an extra source of hydration and also help balance oil production in your skin. Our new Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil is an innovative facial oil that treats signs of aging, hydrates deeply and is suitable for all skin types.

DAY 28
Exercise regularly. Physical activity increases circulation which helps nourish skin cells all over the body, including the face (WebMD).

DAY 29
Wash your pillowcase today and at least once a week. Bacteria stays on the fabric and can transfer to your face easily if bed linens aren’t kept clean.

DAY 30
Treat puffy eyes with cucumber slices and our Cucumber Eye Gel. A few minutes with the cooling effects of cucumber slices and a soothing application of our eye gel will revive eyes and reduce puffiness quickly.

Here are the first 16 tips to kick off the month – check back with us next week to complete the 30 day habit!

chart_1
DAY 1
Go dairy and sugar free today. Especially if you’re recovering from an indulgent holiday diet, you’ll want to reduce your intake of these types of food. Studies now show a definite link between consuming dairy and high-sugar foods with problem skin (Skin Inc).

DAY 2
Wear moisturizer with sunscreen today and everyday. Did you know that UV rays are responsible for 80% of all signs of aging skin (Daily Mail)? Try one of our favorites, the Red Currant Protective Moisturizer SPF30 and screen your complexion from the visible signs of aging.

DAY 3
Drink 8 glasses of water today and everyday. Water hydrates your skin and helps clear toxins from the body.

DAY 4
Clean your makeup brushes today and at least once a week with our Natural Brush Cleaner. Keep your skin in its best shape by avoiding bacteria which can be spread by dirty makeup applicators.

DAY 5
Treat age spots and other hyperpigmentation issues. Stop ignoring uneven pigmentation on your skin and brighten your look with our Bright Skin Licorice Root Booster-Serum.

DAY 6
Exfoliate today and at least twice a week. Sloughing off dead skin cells will brighten up the look of your complexion and prevent clogged pores. Try our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant which can be used for all skin types.

DAY 7
Book a facial at an authorized Éminence spa. Take your skin to the next level with regular treatments at a spa with estheticians who are trained in Éminence techniques and products.

DAY 8
Massage your skin lightly when cleansing. Instead of rinsing straight away, massage lightly with fingertips to increase circulation at the skin’s surface.

DAY 9
Go without makeup today. Give your skin a chance to rest and breathe freely without cosmetics for at least one day on a regular basis.

DAY 10
Drink a cup of green tea. Packed with healthy antioxidants, green tea combats free radicals that age the skin and body.

DAY 11
Mask today and at least once a week. Facial masks can add hydration, balance skin, pull out impurities and replenish nutrients. Explore our masques and treatments for one that’s right for your skin type.

DAY 12
Exfoliate your lips. Is your pucker feeling rough and scaly? Try the Citrus Enzyme Lip Exfoliator in our Lip Trio Kit to refine and smooth the lip area with fruit enzymes.

DAY 13
Apply body lotion after your shower everyday. Maximize hydration by locking in a layer of moisture immediately with a moisturizer like our Coconut Firming Body Lotion.

DAY 14
Wear sunglasses. When you reduce the number of times you squint and frown due to bright daylight, you diminish the fine lines and crow’s feet that develop around your eyes.

DAY 15
Get your beauty sleep. Target dark undereye circles and puffy eyes by getting a full night’s sleep and look refreshed the next morning.

DAY 16
Wipe down your cellphone. Do you know how many germs live on your cellphone which transfer to your face when you answer a call? Clean your phone regularly and promote healthy, bacteria-free skin.
