How to Shape and Define Your Brows Like a Pro

Eyebrows have come center stage in the world of makeup; a full, defined brow is in demand more than ever. Perfectly groomed brows frame the face, and if done correctly, can act as an instant eye-lift. They set up your eye area making any eye shadow, liner and or mascara pop and ensuring your eyes become the focal point. To achieve your perfect eye brows, follow these quick steps.

First things first, put down and step away from the tweezers. Over tweezing leads to overly thin and misshapen brows, which require more work on your end to make them full and beautiful again. If any tweezing will take place it should occur at the end of grooming your brows to clean up excess hair.  Remember, we tweeze our brows, we do not pluck them.

How to Shape Your Eyebrows

Brow shape is unique to everyone’s face. Eyebrows are not a one size fits all situation; what looks stunning on your best friend or favorite celebrity, may not be the best shape for you. Here are three steps to help you find the most perfect brow shape for your face:

  1. To find out where your brow should begin (point A), align the flat edge of a straight makeup brush to the outside of your nose/inner corner of your eye.
  2. Your true arch (point B) is found by taking your brush and laying it diagonally from your nostril to the outside edge of your iris.
  3. Determine where your brow should end (point C) by using your brush to create a line from the outside corner of your nose diagonally to the outside corner of your eye.

The Perfect Brow for your Face Shape

  • For a Round Face: To minimize the curve of a round face, direct the outer third of your brow towards the top of the ear.
  • For a Square Face: If the face is square, direct the outer third of your brow toward the middle of the ear. This helps balance the face.
  • For a Long Face: If the face is long, keep the brow more straight across, directing the outer third above the ear.
  • For an Oval Face: An oval face already looks balanced, but to enhance this harmony, you can direct the outer third towards the ear lobe.

The Perfect Brow for your Eye Shape

  • For Wide Set Eyes: Make sure the inner corner of your brows are closer together.  First, mark where your brow should begin by using the Eye Pencil in Taupe to make a small line towards the center of your nostril. Then, use all your other angles to determine where the brow should arch and end.
  • For Close Set Eyes: Try not to make the mistake of over tweezing the area between your eyes; this will throw off they symmetry of your face. All you need to do is use the Retractable Brow Pencil to extend the true arch point out further, to give the eyes more of a wide set appearance.
  • For Hooded Eye Lids: Your ideal brow is thinner. This will open up the eye area and it appear larger and wider. Try to avoid a large, heavy brow because it will create the illusion that the eye is being pulled down further.
  • For Deep Set Eyes: Your goal is to offset any of the shadows seen around the whole eye area. Too dark eye brows will make your eyes appear deeper set than they really are. So, try working with a lighter brow shade, and keep your brow shape more angular. If the brows are too round in shape, they can actually accentuate dark circles.
  • For More Mature Eyes: The trick is to not drag the end tail of your eyebrow down; no need to assist gravity. First, find your true arch. Then, slightly lift the tail of the eyebrow as you create the end point. This will create an illusion of a more youthful eye.

How to Define Your Eyebrows

  1. Once the eyebrow shape is determined, brush the hairs up using a little bit of Clear PureBrow Brow Fix Gel to show you what is going on with your brows, where you need to fill, and so on.
  2. Fill in any gaps and define your brows with the GreatShape Eyebrow Kit. Use small upwards strokes with the angle brow brush included in the eyebrow makeup kit to create lift and the illusion of natural hair.
  3. Seal your work with eyebrow gel to keep everything in place.
  4. Once your perfectly groomed eyebrows are filled in, you can tweeze away whatever is left over. This way you don’t risk over tweezing!

5 Spring Color Trends to Try by Jane Iredale

We could name a thousand things we love about beauty, but one of our favorite things are the trends. In fashion, we often feel like the best trend is no trend at all, but in beauty, experimentation is part of the fun. Sometimes, trying new trends is less about purchasing the newest product formula and more about trying new color combinations. So, let’s talk about five of the coolest color trends for spring 2017.

Spring 2017 Beauty Color Trends

Color Trend #1: Brown

spring 2017 color trends, brown lipstick

How to Wear It: On your lips! It may sound very 90s, but brown lips are back and it looks amazing on every single skin tone. From chocolate to pinky nudes, brown is every where you turn. Our trick to wearing this trend without going overboard is to choose a shade that is slightly darker than your natural lip color.

Try this: Lisa PureMoist Lipstick; add a subtle pink to the lipstick by layering Pink Lip Pencil or Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain underneath it.

Color Trend #2: Peach

spring 2017 color trends, monochromatic peach makeup

How to Wear It: Peach is one of our favorite colors for spring because you can wear it all over your face in both matte and shimmery textures. If you want to try this monochromatic look, we recommend creating a subtle gradient peach eye makeup look and then keep your cheeks and lips natural with just a hint of color.

Try this: Peaches & Cream Bronzer; mix and match the four peachy shades to create different eye makeup and blush looks.

Color Trend #3: Mauve

spring 2017 color trends, mauve eye shadow

How to Wear It:  We like to give our complexion and overall glowy effect by creating a smokey mauve eye makeup look. Create this simple look by applying a light mauve shade to the lid, then adding drama with a darker wine tone or even a deep brown. You can also use a mauve nail polish for the perfect transitional manicure for spring.

Try this: Soft Kiss PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple; this eye shadow trio has all the necessary shades required to create the perfect mauve smokey eye look.

Color Trend #4: Blue

spring 2017 color trends, blue eye liner under eye

How to Wear It: We’ve said it before, but blue eye makeup is the IT trend this spring, and we promise it can be chic and completely work appropriate. Our favorite way to add a little blue to our look is to line our bottom lash line with blue eyeliner.

Try this: Midnight Blue Eye Pencil; read this blog post to find out how real women wear blue eye makeup.

Color Trend #5: Pink

spring 2017 color trends, draping, blush explosion

How to Wear It: Can you say blush explosion? No, we aren’t talking about the woeful moment when you accidentally drop your blush while multi-tasking in the morning. This is a playful way of describing our favorite spring trend, draping. What is draping? It’s a technique that uses blush instead of bronzer to contour.

Try this: Susan PureMoist Lipstick and Pink Quartz PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple; go all out by pairing your rosy cheeks with a touch of pink to the eye and lips.

Pro Tips: How to Wear Red Lipstick

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and two colors are on our mind – pink and red. Pink is our favorite lipstick color when we want to create an effortless, natural makeup look. But, red is the shade we choose when we want to stand out and feel confident. You may think a red lip is only for movie stars and women who drink everything out of straws. But we’re here to show you how easy it is to create a red pout that works with your style. Keep reading for simple tips from our Global Makeup Educators on how to wear red lipstick.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wear Red Lipstick

If you rarely wear red lipstick, here are a few pointers from Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez and Hannah Hatcher. With these four steps, you’ll have a soft, kiss-friendly pout all night.

Exfoliate First – “Red lipstick looks best on smooth, hydrated, plumped lips,” says Edgar. He recommends exfoliating and hydrating your lips with our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator & Plumper before you even pick out your lipstick shade.

Define Your Lips – Use a lip liner that is a similar color to your lipstick (try Crimson Lip Pencil). This will give your lips natural definition. Hannah Suggests lining and filling in your lips with the same shade to help create a kiss-proof finish.

Use a Lip Brush – For the most precise look, Edgar recommends using our Retractable Lip Brush to apply the lipstick. The brush will make it easier to color inside your lip pencil line.

Set It, and Go! – For a matte stay-put pucker, Hannah likes to finish her red lipped look with a little Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder. You can use your finger to gently dab it on over your lipstick.

Choosing the Right Red Lip for You

Red lip products come in many different shades and formulations. From the classic red lipstick à la Marilyn Monroe to a more natural red lip tint, we have you covered. Here are our favorite red lip products to use for a natural, classic or long-lasting look.

Natural Reds

  • “My favorite red shade that is youthful and flattering on all skin tones is Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain,’ says Edgar. “It has the perfect balance of coral and red, leaving you with a smooth personalized signature red that stays.”
  • Want to add a little shimmer to your candy apple lip? Product Trainer Christine Orcutt Savolis suggests topping your favorite lip product with Crabapple or Red Current PureGloss Lip Gloss.

The Classic Red

  • If you are looking for the classic red lipstick, Hannah’s pick is Cindy PureMoist Lipstick.

Long-lasting Reds

  • To ensure your lip color lasts through your romantic dinner, Global Makeup Educator Shawn Towne recommends using Lip Fixation. He says, “apply the stain from Passion Lip Fixation to your lips, then top it with Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. The color it creates is really rich and beautiful.”
  • Christine’s secret to a matte red is Hot PlayOn Lip Crayon. She also likes to layer it with Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain for added staying power. “I always say when you want a red lip, you want it to last, ” she says. “Forever Red really stays and is easy to touch up later in the day.”

Makeup Removal: How To Avoid A Halloween Skin Disaster

halloweenmakeup

Whether you’re dressing up as a zombie, witch or superhero, nine chances out of ten, you’re going to be applying plenty of makeup this Halloween. A scary costume isn’t complete without several layers of ghoulish makeup to match, and that could mean applying anything from fake blood, glitter, faux eyelashes and everything else in between.

Halloween is the only time of year when “anything goes” when it comes it makeup, but when you’re caking on layer after layer, have you ever stopped to think how all this extra gunk will affect your skin?

A build-up of makeup can lead to skin sensitivity, irritation and breakouts. To avoid a post-Halloween skin disaster, we have 3 skin care tips to prevent turning spooky makeup into scary skin:

1. UP YOUR FACE WASHING GAME

After hours of handing out goodies to trick-or-treaters, or after a late night costume party, you’re probably only thinking about getting some well-deserved shut-eye.

Before you even think about hitting the hay, make sure you wash your face (and we don’t mean just a simple splash of water). Halloween make-up removal is going to involve a little extra time and care.

Suggested cleansing routine:

  • Step 1: Combine our Mineral Cleansing Concentrate with our Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser and mix with a few drops of water. This product mix produces a gentle and natural foaming action which will help effectively remove stuck-on layers of foundation and/or face paint.
  • Step 2:  Use a towel (preferably a dark one) and pat away excess water from your face. Add a couple of drops of our Herbal Eye Makeup Remover to a cotton round pad and apply around the eye area. You may need to do this a few times depending on how heavy your eye makeup is.
  • Step 3: After you’ve thoroughly removed your eye makeup, use the same method in Step 2 but this time with our Rice Milk 3 in 1 Cleansing Water. Apply to your whole face and neck area with a cotton round pad to remove any excess makeup. Give your face a final rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a towel.

Quick Tip: Washing your make-up brushes is just as important as cleansing your skin. If not properly cleaned, makeup brushes can breed all kinds of nasty bacteria that we can’t even begin to think about. To keep the creepy crawlies off your makeup brushes, clean and sanitize them with our Natural Brush Cleanser.

2. APPLY CALMING PRODUCTS TO MINIMIZE IRRITATION

On the scariest night of the year, not only will you be wearing an abundance of makeup, you’ll probably be trying a few unfamiliar products as well. To avoid skin sensitivity, it’s important to treat your skin to gentle, calming products that will help minimize any redness and irritation. After you’ve washed your face, we recommend a quick spritz of our Soothing Chamomile Tonique, followed by an application of our Calm Skin Chamomile Moisturizer. Finish by applying our cooling Cucumber Eye Gel to ease the look of puffiness around your eyes.

3. EXFOLIATE AND PURIFY YOUR PORES

To help your skin recover from its Halloween hangover, we recommend giving your complexion extra care and attention the morning after.

Start the day by exfoliating thoroughly to help unclog pores and prevent the appearance of breakouts. Our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is a gentle exfoliant for all skin types that can be used on its own or mixed with your favorite cleanser.

According to Seventeen Magazine, when left-over cosmetics on your face are mixed with oil on your T-zone, it can cause clogged pores or even worse, bacterial infections – ick! The best way to purify your pores is to follow up your exfoliation treatment with an application of our Charcoal Masque from our Balancing Masque Duo. The activated charcoal found in this masque has unique detoxification and absorption properties that help draw out excess toxins and bacteria from the skin.

DIY: Makeup Brush Cleanser

makeupbrushdiy

Are your makeup brushes in need of some deep cleaning? This makeup brush cleanser is super easy and only takes three simple ingredients!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil

5 drops Melaleuca essential oil

5 drops Grapefruit essential oil

Directions:

1. Add Fractionated Coconut Oil and essential oils into a small bowl.

2. Swirl your brush in the Fractionated Coconut Oil for 30 seconds, or until you see the makeup stored in your brush start to come out.3. Rub in a circular motion on the palm of hand to help get the makeup out.

3. Rinse the brush under warm water. Gently squeeze brush bristles until clean, and the water runs clear. Please note: Make sure to point the bristles down when running under water. Direct water contact may loosen the glue where the bristles are attach and shorten the life of your brushes.

4. Let your newly cleaned makeup brushes dry on a towel for 4 hours, or until dry. Repeat once a month, or as needed.

How To Avoid Ruining Your Skin Care Products

avoidruiningproducts

Fresh is best. Just as you nourish your body with fruits and vegetables at their peak freshness, you want to keep your complexion flawless with skin care products in their best condition. After all, keeping your moisturizers and masques untainted is essential for the most effective skin care. Here are five easy tips for keeping your skin care products pure and potent:

1. Use a spatula: Your hands are dirty, it’s a fact. With every Éminence masque and moisturizer, you will find a small plastic spatula. Using this added tool will help keep your products free from any germs clinging to your hands! It’s easy to use and great for measuring how much product you need.

2. When using one of our best sellers like the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant, keep the bottle away from water. If water seeps in through the opening, the product could cake and mold and you definitely don’t want that to happen! If you must keep it in the shower for a morning scrub, ensure you keep the bottle well away from excess water spillage.

3. Wash your brushes: This may seem like a no brainer for most but the lack of convenience and time for cleaning means that many brushes go dirty. With our easy-to-use Natural Brush Cleanser, save time with a couple of spritzes on a paper towel and wipe your makeup brushes down. This will help keep your products AND brushes clean.

4. Keep containers closed: Even if you’re in a rush to get to work in the mornings or to bed at night – stop for a minute and remember to close the lid on your containers! Not only will your products stay clean, they will keep fresh for longer. Depending on the product, it could dry out and harden when left open. Just look at what happens when you forget to put the top back on your toothpaste!

5. Generally speaking, keep your products in a dark, dry place. Naturally, we store our skin care products in the washroom which is fine but if you can go a step further and also keep them in a drawer or medicine cabinet, your products will thank you for it.

Fun tip: Some products like the Clear Skin Probiotic Masque, are great to store in the refrigerator. The cold environment keeps the masque fresh and also adds a cooling sensation!

6 On-the-Go Makeup Essentials

6onthegomakeup

If you’re anything like us, you would need rolling luggage to carry all of your makeup with you on-the-go. Instead of playing the constant traveler, try paring your makeup bag down to these six essential items:

Powder Foundation + Travel Brush: Powder foundation (like PurePressed Base or Amazing Base) is extremely versatile and can be used as a foundation, concealer or even finishing powder. Ours even contain SPF to protect from the sun. Keep the inside of your bag clean by bringing a travel foundation brush that’s either retractable or can be filled with the loose powder.

Cream Blush: A cream blush stick makes reapplication easy. You can apply it with your finger, so there’s no need for a blush brush!

One or Two Lip Products: We know how easy it is to carry a collection of lip products for every occasion, but that can weigh down your bag. Lighten the load by only bringing the lipstick or lip gloss used in your makeup look that day, and swap out the products each day or so.

Liquid Eye Shadow: If you usually touch up your eye shadow midday, toss a creamy, liquid eye shadow in your bag. Use the built-in brush for easy application and to cut down on the number of brushes you have to carry.

Brown Eyeliner: A brown eye pencil can be used in a number of different ways. Apply it over your current eyeliner (black or brown) to touch up your look after a long day work or use it as an eyebrow pencil to define your brows before you go out.

Want to know what Jane carries in her tote? Here are the products she always has in her bag during the summer:
