gingerbreadblogThe holiday season wouldn’t be complete without your favorite festive treat. For some it’s shortbread cookies, for others it might be candy canes or chocolate. Whatever your guilty pleasure – there’s no denying that gingerbread cookies are on top of everyone’s holiday indulgence list.

Lucky for you – we have a gingerbread recipe for you that contains natural and healthy ingredients so you can satisfy your sweet tooth – guilt-free!

INGREDIENTS:
1 large egg
1/3 cup coconut oil (melted at room temperature)
1/3 cup maple syrup or raw honey
1/4 cup unsulphured organic molasses
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 tsp dried ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups organic whole wheat flour (or gluten free flour blend)

OPTIONAL:
Cookie toppings: Ground nuts, seeds, candies or powdered icing sugar.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
2. Combine dry ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
3. Lightly beat egg in a separate bowl, adding wet ingredients until well-combined.
4. Slowly add dry ingredients (about 1/4 cup at a time) to wet ingredients, mixing with a spatula or wooden spoon first. The consistency may be different if you choose a gluten-free flour mixture. Once the dough mixture thickens, knead and mix it with clean hands until it forms a thick consistency.
5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface, and add excess flour to a rolling pin.
6. Roll out dough with a rolling pin until approximately 1/2 inch in thickness.
7. Cut out cookies using your favorite festive-shaped cookie cutters.
8. If you decide to garnish the cookies with candy sprinkles or ground nuts/seeds, this is when you would decorate the cookies as you wish. For a powdered sugar finish see step 10.
9. Place cut out cookies on a parchment paper-covered baking tray and bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should rise slightly.
10. Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool completely at room temperature.
11. Once cookies have cooled, sift powdered sugar over top of cookies.
12. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks. Makes approximately 1 dozen cookies depending on cookie cutter size.

sweetcassarole
With Thanksgiving just around the corner we thought we would share some delicious holiday recipes, but with a healthier doTERRA twist. The first recipe is a Sweet Potato Casserole with pecan topping and spiced with doTERRA Cinnamon essential oil. This side dish is sweet, creamy, and highlights many fabulous fall flavors.

Health Highlights:
Most holiday meals leave us feeling sluggish and maybe a little guilty, but there is a silver lining to this tasty Thanksgiving treat. Check out some of the health benefits that this casserole contains:

Sweet Potatoes: Though they are “sweet,” these vegetables still offer plenty of nutrients. Due to a low glycemic index, sweet potatoes can be helpful in maintaining energy and controlling blood sugar, which is helpful for everyone, especially those with diabetes.

Orange: The fiber, potassium, and vitamin C in oranges help support heart health. Increasing potassium intake can help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Nutmeg: Nutmeg can act as a sedative, and helps with inflammation, muscle pain, arthritis, and more.

Ingredients:
4 cooked sweet potatoes, peeled
3/4 cup canned coconut milk
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 orange, juiced
Salt and pepper to taste
4 drops Cinnamon essential oil

Pecan topping:
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2 drops Cinnamon essential oil

Directions:
Place cooked sweet potatoes, coconut milk, coconut oil, maple syrup, nutmeg, orange juice, and Cinnamon essential oil into a large bowl.
With a hand mixer, blend until everything is combined. If desired, you can add more maple syrup or essential oil.
Spread into an oven-safe dish and set aside.
Combine all topping ingredients until pecans are well coated. Sprinkle on top of sweet potatoes.
Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes, or until pecans have slightly browned. Serve warm.

Tip: For additional deliciousness, drizzle maple syrup on top.

Healthy, glowing skin means giving your body the best nature has to offer. That includes eating plenty of organic fruits and veggies as well as feeding your skin with products that are chock-full of natural and organic ingredients.

How else can you flush the toxins this fall? Getting a good night’s sleep, sweating it out and drinking plenty of water are just a few more ways that you can detox naturally. Add to that list our favorite go-to for detoxification: a simple smoothie. With inspiration from the fall harvest, this Autumn Detox Smoothie incorporates fresh fruits and veggies of the season that are packed full of antioxidants, nutrients and plenty of detoxification properties.

Below are a selection of key smoothie ingredients that can help you cleanse and detox the natural way:

Beets (a.k.a beetroot) – Not only are they rich in fiber (and color), beets are also a potent source of vitamin A, manganese and nitrates. This purple veggie works hard to purify your blood stream and deeply cleanse your liver (Veg Kitchen).

Pears – As one of the highest-fiber fruits, 1 pear meets your daily requirement of 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. This fruit cleanses your colon, prevents belly bloat and keeps your digestive tract in check (PopSugar).

Apples – High in vitamins A and C, calcium and fiber, apples help clear the digestive track and expel toxins from your system (Best Health).

Spinach – When it comes to detox, leafy greens are your friend. Greens like spinach boost chlorophyll levels in the digestive tract which helps rid your body of toxins (PopSugar).

Ginger – In addition to its liver cleansing properties, ginger has approximately 40 antioxidant properties that fight free radicals and provide anti-aging benefits.

THE RECIPE:

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium beet
  • 1 cup of organic baby spinach
  • 1 pear
  • ½ red apple (we used an organic Red Gala apple)
  • ½ green apple (we used an organic Granny Smith apple)
  • 1 1-inch piece of fresh ginger (grated)
  • 1 handful of fresh mint leaves (chopped)
  • ½ ripe banana
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 1 tbsp of honey (or to taste if you prefer a sweeter tasting smoothie)
  • ⅓ cup of water (coconut water or coconut milk optional)
  • 5 ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Chop beets, pear, and apples into small cube sized pieces.
  2. Grate ginger and chop mint into smaller pieces.
  3. Place all ingredients in blender, with the exception of the beets.
  4. Bring water to a boil on the stovetop and add beets. Boil for 2 minutes.
  5. Remove beets from boiling water and add to blender with other ingredients.
  6. Squeeze lime juice into the blender on top of the ingrdients.
  7. Add honey, water (or coconut water/milk) and ice cubes to the mixture and blend on high until all ingredients are combined.
  8. Option 1: Pour into glass and serve.
  9. Option 2: If you prefer a cold smoothie, we suggest pouring the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze for several hours. Once frozen, put cubes back in the blender, add approximately ¼ cup of water and blend on high until smooth.

Serves 1-2

Share this cool and creative treat this summer at your next backyard bash.

Ingredients:

6 large lemons or 4 medium oranges

Sugar/honey to taste

4 cups water

2–4 drops Lemon or Wild Orange essential oil

Directions:

Clean and wash fruit. Cut off the top quarter and slice a thin bevel off the bottom of the fruit, so they stand up straight.

Using a grapefruit knife, carefully remove and save the flesh and juice; be careful not to cut through the bottom. Stand the rinds on a plate or cookie sheet and freeze until solid.

Combine scooped out flesh and juice with essential oil in a food processor or blender; pulse until mostly pureed then press mixture through a fine-mesh strainer.

Stir in water; add sugar or honey one tablespoon at a time to taste. Pour mixture into large roasting pan or baking dish, large enough that the liquid isn’t more than one inch deep.

Freeze for 1–3 hours. Remove mixture from freezer every hour and scrape with two forks to break up ice.

When the granita is frozen, rake until glittery. Scoop into frozen lemon or orange shells and serve.
