We all hear about the dangers we face from the sun. Beauty magazines proclaim the sun’s aging effects, medical experts lecture us on skin cancer, and your friends Instagram the latest photos of their painful sunburn.
We say: Believe the hype and get informed because, like most people, you’re probably using
your sunscreen wrong. Want to make sure you’re truly protected this summer? Here’s a definitive guide to natural sunscreen and how to wear it.
What’s the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVB are the rays that lead to sun damage and skin cancer. UVA rays accelerate aging, cause photo damage and can penetrate glass and cloud cover. Make sure that you choose a sunscreen that protects against both types of rays.
What SPF should I choose?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how long your skin will be protected from UVB rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends an SPF of 30 or higher.
How much sunscreen do I need to put on?
For the face and neck:
Use 1 teaspoon on each area (Skin Cancer Foundation).
Our Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32 is one of the best sunscreens for the face because it’s a broad spectrum formulation which protects against both UVA / UVB rays and doubles up as a fantastic makeup primer. Perfect for keeping cosmetics in place on a hot summer day.
Our Tropical Vanilla Body SPF 32 not only provides UVA/UVB protection but also takes you on a beautiful sensory journey with hints of vanilla and linden tea! Health & Wellness magazine touts it as one of their “Scent-sational Top Picks.” Practical yet indulgent.
Where do I apply?
Not only should you slather sunscreen on the main parts of your face and body but also these easily forgotten areas: the tops of ears, lips, back of the neck and the hands. Men with little to no hair should always be diligent in applying sunscreen to the entire head!
How do I choose the right sunscreen for my skin type?
Here is a list of sunscreens ideal for your skin –
Oily Skin: Red Currant Protective Moisturizer SPF 32
Combination Skin: Persimmon and Cantaloupe Day Cream SPF 32
Dry Skin: Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32
Uneven Skin: Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 30
How do I protect against the signs of sun damage but also not ruin my makeup?
With all the events going on during the summer (wedding season!), you need to be protective but still look good. We recommend Sun Defense Minerals as the easiest and safest way to get that sun kissed glow. Use a lighter shade of the Sun Defense Minerals as your foundation or highlighter, and a darker shade as your bronzer or contour. You can also use the Sun Defense Minerals as a tint for your décolleté, shoulders and legs to give the appearance of a natural tan!

If you didn’t already know, May was Melanoma Awareness Month! With a quest to spoil your skin with the most pure and eco-conscious products as possible we want to help keep you protected from the sunlight’s damaging effects.
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and one of the most common cancers diagnosed in the United States. Rates of incidence have been rapidly rising, in fact, they have increased fifteen times over the past 40 years. It is estimated that in 2016 there will be about 76,000 new cases of melanoma and around 10,000 deaths in the United States alone. Referred to as a “skin” cancer disease, many disregard melanoma as merely remaining on the surface of our bodies and therefore do not realize the seriousness in contracting this deadly disease.
Melanoma is the most common cancer in young women ages 20-39 and second most common cancer in young men. While you can’t turn back time, you can take preventative measures from here on out and help spread the message for raising sun protection awareness! Here are some precautions you can take for preventing Melanoma:
1. Apply SPF Every. Single. Day.
Even on cloudy days or days when you are going to work or running errands, it is pertinent that you still wear sun protection as UV rays can penetrate through the windows of your car, office, or even home. It’s this daily exposure that adds up and resulting in not only premature aging, but sun damage as well!
2. Wear clothing to further protect your skin
Today’s trends make it easy to be stylish yet sun safe at the same time! Kimono tops, linen beach pants, and a wide-brimmed hats are perfect for adding that extra layer of protection when out at the beach or pool this summer.
3. Consider a Self-Tanner
Can’t live without a tan? Consider a self-tanning formula (one that is as natural as possible, as many can be filled with harmful chemicals) and continue to layer on SPF daily. Some of these formulas can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so be sure to take extra precaution! Whatever you do, avoid indoor tanning at all costs, as tanning beds can increase the risk of melanoma by up to 75%.
4. Limit sun exposure from 10am – 2pm
Seek shade or limit sun exposure between the hours of 10am and 2pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. If your shadow is shorter than your height, you know the sun’s rays are at their peak!
5. Check for signs of skin cancer at least once a month
At least once a month, take 10 minutes to check your skin, from head to toe, for signs of skin cancer. Catching melanoma in its early stages can increase the chance of being cured by 98%.
Here are the ABCDE’s for detecting melanoma:
Asymmetry – one half of the mole does not match the other
Borders – borders of the mole are rugged, notched, or blurred
Color – color varies from one area to another of the mole
Diameter – melanomas are usually 6mm in diameter when diagnosed, but can be smaller
Evolving – continues to change in size, shape, or color

Choosing a sunscreen can be overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider (SPF, formulation, application, etc.) that it’s easy to give up and just pick the first one you see. One of the most confusing elements of the process is deciding whether to buy a physical sunscreen or a chemical one.

The beach can be a place of solace and serenity, which is why most people run to it every Summer. To silence our thoughts in deep meditation while hearing crashing waves by the shore, to stretch our body in yoga poses underneath the natural light of the sun, or to read a good book on a beach blanket without interruption, are amongst the few reasons our bare feet anticipate our arrival amidst the soft sand.
But even if you’re one of those people who prefer to hide beneath shade because of the power of the scorching Sun, there’s a new organic sun care line called COOLA, that will protect and prevent you from receiving sunburns, age spots, and skin wrinkling. What’s even better is that some of the COOLA products exude sweet, tropical fragrances in Coconut, Pina Colada, Citrus Mimosa, and Fresh Mango scents – to name a few.
Although we love the glowing beauty of a suntan, we all know that mother nature is nothing to fool with.
To get the most out of your Summer, choose either a spray bottle or lotion for your face, lip and body (containing an SPF 20, 30, 35 or 50) so that you can comfortably relax during these extended Summer days.
When visiting the Green Spa, make sure to inquire our staff about the various options we carry. Summer takes too long to come and leaves sooner than we want. So reap the benefits of this Season and allow the warmth, beauty and vitality of the sunshine to give you a boost of natural joy!
It’s that time of year where snowflakes and the polar vortex seemed like they never happened. But what comes extra exposure to the sun’s rays is the threat of premature aging and skin cancer. I know to sounds harsh but thousands of people are diagnosed in the US with skin cancer every day. And most people receive the most sun damage in their first 18 years of life. We want you to enjoy the sun safely. In fact, the sun is your most valuable resource for Vitamin D. If you sit in the sun without sunscreen for 10 minutes you receive all the Vitamin D you need for the day and then some.
After those SPF-free ten minutes, being out in the sun isn’t an issue if you use SPF 15-30. Make sure the bottle is labeled ‘broad spectrum’ to protect you from both UVB and UVA rays. Each year buy new sun screen. Despite the printed expiration date, the ingredients that protect you from harmful rays lose their effectiveness over a year. Always spring for a new bottle.
At the Green Spa we run a one-on-one Summer Lovin’ SPF Clinic where an expert gives you advice on what sunscreens to use and how you can maintain great skin at any age. We also carry our favorite and most effective SPF’s from Eminence, La Bella Donna, and Jane Iredale. Here why we think you’ll love them:
This 2-in-1 powder and sun screen from Eminence should be your summer jam! We sell a variety of colors at the spa and can match your skin tone. It’s one of our faves because it’s non-greasy like lotion and gives your skin a matte finish.
Jane Iredale’s Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream covers, conceals and illuminates the skin for a flawless glow. Aloe leaf calms irritation while sunflower seed oil moisturizes to keep the skin soft.
This all-organic sunblock from Eminence not only protects but has an ample amount of shea butter that soothes the skin. Its sweet smell will sure have you reapplying!
